Getting to Know You

At the start of the new academic year, Professor Jennifer Strickler provided each student with a name tag that also included different questions as part of an icebreaker activity and to help students make connections with one another. The students had some great answers we thought we鈥檇 share with you!

There are some common themes in many of their replies:

What would you do in life if money weren鈥檛 an issue?

 • Skyla: I would like to give back to teachers and students in need by donating money, food, and school supplies. I would also like to go to different places in the world to speak up and help teach!
 • Gela: I would travel the world and help other countries build things. I would give out money to people on the streets.
 • Saedie: I would donate to a charity or travel the world!
 • Sarah: Teaching
 • Hannah: Travel the world and help others
 • Brooklynn: I would live on the beach & travel & I would teach!

I wish I had more time for鈥

 • T茅a: Deepening relationships with new people
 • Chloe M.: Fun with friends, and sleep
 • Maggie: Seeing my friends!!
 • Dani: Family and friends
 • Sophi: Reading for fun and baking!
 • Charlotte: Seeing the people I love!

And They鈥檙e Off!

FEA students began their practicum assignments on Friday, Sept. 25, working alongside cooperating teachers in 13 designated elementary schools in five counties. These placements provide valuable classroom-based, teacher-shadowing experiences ranging from a minimum of 20 hours to more than 200 hours before the practicum concludes on Jan 15, 2027.

Before we sent them on their assignments, our EDU professors prepped them on what to expect in this experiential learning environment. Juniors are expected to engage, dress professionally and have positive attitudes. As this is their second year, seniors are expected to observe teacher and student interactions, assess the value of classroom materials, glean information about instructional strategies and pedagogy, and engage with the students, the teacher, and the curriculum.

The juniors were provided with an FEA polo shirt and a lanyard for professional dress. Seniors already have their polos from last year and were given a practicum starter pack consisting of an FEA cinch pack, folder and lanyard. Make us proud and set good examples with the littles, future educators!

First Speeches in Public Speaking

Professor Sarah Pangle, instructor for CST 100: Principles of Public Speaking, shared a few great photos of FEA juniors as they gave their first speeches!

91探花 welcomes its second cohort of Future Educators Academy students /2026/09/09/laurel-ridge-community-college-welcomes-its-second-cohort-of-future-educators-academy-students/ Thu, 10 Sep 2026 01:21:35 +0000 /?p=201071

91探花 recently welcomed 26 juniors into the Future Educators Academy. They join the 19 seniors already enrolled in the program, which gives them a jump start on an Education degree.

The post 91探花 welcomes its second cohort of Future Educators Academy students first appeared on 91探花.]]>

Future Educators Academy Director Lori Killough believes the lab school鈥檚 future is bright 鈥 as long as it continues to be funded.

Created to help with widespread teacher shortages across the region, 91探花鈥檚 Middletown Campus welcomed its first cohort of students to the lab school in fall 2025. Partner institution, Germanna Community College, got its start the year before. High schoolers first enroll during their junior year, spending mornings at 91探花 and the rest of their day at their home schools. The program is free for the students.

For the students who successfully earn an associate degree in Education at the same time they graduate high school, there is guaranteed admission into the education programs at Mary Baldwin University, Old Dominion University, Shenandoah University, University of Lynchburg and University of Mary Washington, with more agreements in the works. However, they can transfer to any four-year in the state, Professor Killough noted.

鈥淚t was a really good opportunity,鈥 said Luray High School senior Emilee Tedder.

While she hadn鈥檛 always known for sure she wanted to be a teacher, it was something she had considered since her elementary school days.

鈥淲hen the opportunity came, I thought, maybe it鈥檚 a sign,鈥 Emilee said.

In addition to taking core subjects, like English and Math classes at 91探花, she is also taking Education courses on campus.

Junior year is always a tough one academically 鈥 even when the classes aren鈥檛 at the college level 鈥 she noted.

鈥淚 think our cohort really got through it well and we really supported each other a lot,鈥 Emilee said. 鈥淚 really liked our two Education classes. Those have been really fun and hands on. Our Foundations of Education class was a lot more focused on pedagogy, and Human Growth and Development was focused on how a child develops.鈥

She did her practicum last year at an elementary school in Page County, mostly working as a kindergarten aide.

鈥淭he FEA has really helped amplify that I want to be a teacher,鈥 Emilee, who hopes to teach high school English, said. 鈥淚 get really excited sitting in a room with other teachers who are passionate about it.鈥

The latest student cohort of the Future Educators Academy.

Sherando High School senior Maddox Hayes, who hopes to be a history teacher to middle or high schoolers, said his second year at the academy is going well.

鈥淪ince middle school, I鈥檝e found I really like to help people, and this is just an opportunity for me to help people as my full-time job and do it all the time,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y favorite part about FEA is probably how it鈥檚 accelerated and I鈥檓 going to be two years ahead.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great opportunity to get ahead and get started on my future,鈥 said Hannah Luchetti, who hopes to teach elementary school. 鈥淚 really like the FEA. I鈥檝e made a lot of new friends already, and I鈥檝e learned a lot about teaching and about myself.鈥

Ayden Luu, a junior at Stonewall Jackson High School, said being a college student 鈥渇eels great.鈥

鈥淚 enjoy the challenge and different scenery from high school,鈥 he said.

鈥淭he seniors are super-encouraging to us,鈥 said Hannah, who is a junior at Millbrook High School.

Ayden agreed, adding, 鈥淭hey give us a lot of ideas.鈥

The seniors offer advice and answer questions over group chats, he said.

鈥淭he chats are also a great way to know our classmates and create bonds with them,鈥 Ayden said.

Killough said she is excited about the second year of the program, which has 19 seniors and 26 juniors this year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 going well,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e very enthusiastic. The juniors have already started to come together like a cohort.鈥

The seniors have stepped in as mentors to the juniors, Professor Killough said.

鈥淚鈥檓 very proud of the seniors,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd, these juniors are really stepping up and doing well.鈥

It鈥檚 hoped that the FEA will serve as a model for similar academies statewide, said Professor Killough.

鈥淥ther school divisions and community colleges have reached out and asked, 鈥楬ow can we build this?鈥欌 she said.

There are other lab schools of varying kinds in Virginia, but 鈥渙ne of the awesome things about ours is we鈥檙e giving back to the school divisions,鈥 she said.

Professor Killough was referring to the expectation that the students will teach in their local divisions after graduating with their bachelor鈥檚 degrees.

鈥淚t鈥檚 important to keep the FEA going and keep it funded,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is a fabulous program. I鈥檝e already gotten inquiries from high school sophomores and high school counselors about next year.鈥

First class of 91探花 expanded Paramedic Program graduates /2026/08/31/first-class-of-laurel-ridge-community-college-expanded-paramedic-program-graduates/ Mon, 31 Aug 2026 14:50:29 +0000 /?p=200336

91探花's first class of the hybrid Paramedic Program that expanded to the Fauquier Campus in 2025 graduated Aug. 28.

The post First class of 91探花 Community College expanded Paramedic Program graduates first appeared on 91探花.]]>

The very first cohort of Paramedic Program students at 91探花鈥檚 Fauquier Campus graduated with their certificates on Aug. 28. The college expanded its Paramedic course to the Fauquier Campus in fall 2025.

The expansion came at the request of the Fauquier County Department of Fire and Rescue whose members previously had to come to the Middletown Campus if they wanted to upgrade their credentials from emergency medical technician (EMT) to paramedic.

The program was specifically designed to provide accessible, high-quality EMS education through a hybrid format. Students were able to attend in person once a week while continuing to work and manage family responsibilities. The program partnered with Fauquier Health to provide students with local clinical training.

91探花 EMS Director R.J. Monta帽o imparted some advice to the students during the graduation ceremony.

鈥淓very crew has someone who sets the tone,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 approach patient care the same way. I ask myself, 鈥業f this were my wife, my kids, or my parents, how would I want someone to treat them?鈥 Make sure you always treat people with dignity, even when they鈥檙e difficult. Compassion isn鈥檛 something a patient has to earn. Treat your coworkers the same way. Help the new EMT. Encourage the struggling student. Teach what you know. A high tide lifts all ships. Helping someone else become better makes all of EMS better.鈥

While medical technology will continue to advance, 鈥渋ntegrity, humility, compassion and kindness will never become outdated,鈥 Monta帽o added.

Graduate Emily Glaze said the program was very convenient for her because she lives in Warrenton.

鈥淩.J., our main instructor, was phenomenal,鈥 said Glaze, who works for the county fire department. 鈥淥ur program was fantastic. Our instructors were great.鈥

The Paramedic Program was specifically designed to provide accessible, high-quality EMS education through a hybrid format.听

She said she was hired by the fire department a couple of months after her 2021 graduation from Fauquier High School.

鈥淚 knew then I wanted to be a paramedic,鈥 Glaze said. 鈥淚 always wanted to help people. I wanted to extend my pre-hospital care knowledge and my skillset. I wanted to help as many people as I could in the pre-hospital setting. I think this is going to be one of the best paramedic programs in the vicinity. It was a lot of fun.鈥

Graduate Sam Cook works for Winchester Fire and Rescue, after having served as a volunteer firefighter while also working in the logging industry.

鈥淚 had never been to college, so the program was a welcoming feeling,鈥 he said.

Cook especially enjoyed learning more about cardiology.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really nice to see how everything works,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 have been with fire and EMS for about 17 years now, and I didn鈥檛 become a career firefighter until February of last year. I figured it was time to lose some weight and just chase the dream that I wanted to do.鈥

He lost more than 100 pounds and became a career firefighter. Cook now plans to take a little break from schooling 鈥 he has a wife and six children 鈥 and then finish his Paramedic associate degree.

On the same day that the inaugural class of Fauquier Campus paramedics graduated, the second cohort had their first day, said Professor Monta帽o.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a full-circle day for the program,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his year we raised the open seats to 24 from 12, and we have filled those and have five students on the waiting list.鈥

Welcome, Class of 2027 and Class of 2028!

It鈥檚 that time of year again! Whether you are one of our 19 returning seniors or one of our 26 new juniors, we are thrilled to have you as part of the FEA family.

The Future Educators Academy is a community of aspiring educators who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of children. Our success is built on the dedication of our exceptional students, the encouragement of supportive families, the guidance of outstanding mentor teachers, and the commitment of our faculty and staff. Together, we will continue to learn from one another, celebrate accomplishments, and overcome challenges as we prepare the next generation of teachers.

At FEA, we believe in creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. While academic excellence remains a priority, we are equally committed to developing the professional dispositions, leadership skills, resilience, empathy, and ethical decision-making that define outstanding educators. Through rigorous coursework, meaningful field experiences, and opportunities to serve and lead, you will continue building the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to positively impact future classrooms and communities.

As we begin this new academic year, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity, step outside your comfort zone, ask questions, build relationships, and support one another. Every lesson you learn and every experience you have brings you one step closer to becoming the educator you aspire to be.

We are excited to see all that you will accomplish this year. Welcome back, and here’s to a year filled with growth, achievement, and unforgettable experiences!

Seniors Will Soon Start the College Application Process

Last March we held our Transfer Institution Day at 91探花, where several universities came to speak about their admissions processes, transfer requirements and student education opportunities. Now that seniors are, or will soon be, applying to four-year colleges, this is a reminder that FEA has Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) regarding guaranteed admission with the following universities:

 • Mary Baldwin University
 • Old Dominion University
 • Shenandoah University
 • University of Lynchburg
 • University of Mary Washington

Because of these MOUs, seniors will still apply through the Common App, which should make your application process a little easier and your application fee should be waived. To help ensure the fee is waived, students should submit their applications during one of the Virginia College Application Weeks: October 19-23 or October 26-30. If seniors have further questions or need additional details regarding admissions and transfer requirements of these universities, please contact the FEA Office.听听

91探花 first in the state to offer new fiber programs; Workforce Solutions piloting Fiber Slicing Specialist and Fiber OTDR courses /2026/08/27/laurel-ridge-community-college-first-in-the-state-to-offer-new-fiber-programs-workforce-solutions-piloting-fiber-slicing-specialist-and-fiber-otdr-courses/ Thu, 27 Aug 2026 15:00:20 +0000 /?p=200192

91探花's Workforce Solutions division is offering new Fiber Splicing and OTDR specialist positions this fall, as well as a Certified Mission Critical Operator course.

The post 91探花 first in the state to offer new fiber programs; Workforce Solutions piloting Fiber Slicing Specialist and Fiber OTDR courses first appeared on 91探花.]]>

91探花 is the first community college in Virginia approved to offer two new Fiber Optics programs: Fiber Splicing Specialist and Fiber OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometer) Specialist.

With the addition of these two FastForward courses, the college鈥檚 Workforce Solutions division is now offering three levels of its Fiber Optics workforce training program, which also includes Fiber Optic Installer and Fiber Optic Technician. Fiber optic cables are used to provide high-speed internet, TV and phone services, all of which remain in high demand.

In the Fiber Splicing Specialist course, students will learn the setup, operation, maintenance and reporting aspects of fusion splicing. Through hands-on training, they鈥檒l learn how to use fusion splicing equipment and to prepare and splice single and ribbon fiber and fusion splice connectors. In the Fiber OTDR Specialist course, students will learn best practices when it comes to preparing and testing installed fiber links.

Additionally, 91探花 is offering a Certified Mission Critical Operator (CMCO) course starting Sept. 1. These operators ensure mission-critical facilities, such as data centers, are able to run without interruption through ensuring that power, cooling, networking and safety systems are reliably performing, and quickly responding to any incidents that could affect that performance.

鈥淭hese are very high-level, advanced courses,鈥 said Workforce Solutions Program Manager Sam Brill. 鈥淢ost employers do not have anybody on staff who is skilled at this level, so they have to call in contractors and bring people in, which gets really, really expensive. We鈥檝e heard from employers about their needs, and we鈥檙e meeting those needs. The jobs are everywhere. It can be local if you want to stay local, or you could work for a contracting company and travel, which often appeals to younger workers.鈥

Evan Manich will be teaching the Fiber Splicing program. He said he has done fiber splicing with Shentel for about eight years.

鈥淚鈥檓 the guy who trains all the fiber splicers, anything that involves working in fiber,鈥 said Manich. 鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of a passion project of mine. I love being able to show new employees, or employees who are trying to come over to fiber, the tricks of the trade. It鈥檚 a fast-growing, stable career path that can see progression. You鈥檙e learning a trade that鈥檚 really become essential to everything that everyone does on a day-to-day basis.鈥

Daniel Judy, manager of the Middletown Data Center, will be teaching the CMCO class.

鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of a foundation class for data center technicians,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t gives you a foundation of what is a mission-critical environment, what does that look like, what do you take care of, what are some of the things that are associated with a facility that is mission critical.鈥

Workforce Credential Grant funding will cover two-thirds of FastForward program costs for eligible students. For those who qualify, G3 funding will pick up any remaining tuition costs.

These courses are ideal for someone who is already in the industry and looking to skill up, as well as for someone new to the industry who wants to go through all three levels of the Fiber courses, Brill said. For now, the two new Fiber programs are being offered at the college鈥檚 Fauquier Campus, but will be coming soon to the Middletown Campus. The CMCO course is being offered in Middletown.

91探花 reminds prospective students that college may be more affordable than they think. During a recent interview on The Valley Today, Director of Financial Aid Buddy Wilson shared that students pursuing degrees, workforce credentials and career training programs have access to a variety of financial aid opportunities, including federal grants, state assistance, G3 funding, FastForward support and scholarships. He encouraged anyone considering college, whether they are a recent high school graduate or an adult returning to school, to explore their options and connect with the college’s financial aid team for personalized guidance.

One of the key messages from the conversation was that cost should not prevent students from taking the first step. 91探花 offers financial aid assistance throughout the application process and helps students identify funding sources they may not realize are available. Programs such as G3, help eligible students prepare for high-demand careers, while FastForward funding supports short-term training programs that lead to new job opportunities, in some cases in just a matter of months. The college also awards millions of dollars annually in grants, scholarships and work-study support, thus creating pathways for students to achieve their educational and career goals.

For those thinking about enrolling, 91探花 offers information sessions, campus visits, open houses and other events designed to answer questions and connect students with resources before classes begin. College leaders emphasized that it is never too late to explore financial aid options and encouraged prospective students to learn more, complete the FAFSA and discover how 91探花 can help them gain skills, earn credentials and move forward with confidence.

FEA Faculty & Dean Win Awards at Annual Recognition Celebration

Future Educators Academy (FEA) faculty received the Collaboration Award at 91探花鈥檚 annual Faculty Awards and Recognition Ceremony in May.

Nine people stand in a line on a stage at a 91探花 event, each of the eight in front holding a framed "Collaboration Award" certificate.

Additionally, Dr. Nicole Munday, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, received the 2026 Distinguished Administrator Award! She was nominated by multiple faculty and staff members who had these things to share about her:

鈥淪he operates with transparency and a can-do attitude, helping navigate challenging situations or to brainstorm solutions in a collaborative and transparent way; she also embodies a wealth of integrity; Nicole weighs decisions in a measured way, and she always shares her rationale and considers feedback as a working piece of her deliberations; Nicole鈥檚 leadership is a steadying influence that helps those working under her maintain their composure and follow by example; she provides insightful suggestions for how to improve processes while still protecting faculty鈥檚 time and main focus on teaching; she truly relies on her faculty鈥檚 knowledge and expertise, and she is often a voice speaking up on college committees and workgroups to consider the faculty鈥檚 point of view鈥.

To her left is a woman with curly blonde hair in a navy top and cream pants, and to her right is a woman with gray-brown hair wearing a royal blue dress and teal earrings. Behind them is a wooden podium with a partial 91探花 sign, a tall floral arrangement with blue and white flowers, and a Virginia state flag.

New Student Orientation

On May 19, the FEA welcomed incoming students and their families to New Student Orientation. Hosted by returning FEA seniors, the event marked the beginning of these students’ journey toward simultaneously earning both an Associate of Science Degree in Education and a high school diploma.

A large room full of attendees seated at round tables with navy tablecloths, watching a presentation at a 91探花 event. On the projector screen, a slide reads "Congratulations! You are a college student!" with a Venn diagram showing "High School," "Dual Enrollment," and "College" overlapping circles. A woman, Lori K., stands at a podium near the screen presenting. 91探花 and Future Educators Academy banners are visible in the background, along with American and Virginia state flags. Attendees have papers, water bottles, and popcorn on their tables.

The evening introduced students and families to the academic expectations of college coursework, FEA policies and procedures, practicum requirements, student support services, and program logistics. Current FEA seniors, Skyla and Derek, shared their experiences and offered words of encouragement to the incoming class.

Four smiling people pose at a 91探花 Future Educators Academy welcome table in a hallway. Two young women stand on the left side of the table, one in a gray floral top and one in a black polka-dot blouse, while two young men in matching navy polo shirts sit behind the table. The table is covered with a navy blue tablecloth reading "91探花 Future Educators Academy," and holds stacks of blue folders, a mug of pens, and papers. A sign behind them reads "Welcome Future Educators," and a 91探花 digital display is visible in the background.

Parents and students then participated in separate sessions. Parents met with FEA Director Lori Killough, who offered encouragement and practical guidance on supporting their students as they transition into the responsibilities and expectations of college while still in high school. New and returning FEA students took part in team-building activities led by FEA Professor Jennifer Strickler.

The evening concluded with optional campus tours, and students and families left excited to begin classes on Aug. 17.

FEA Students and Professor Join the 20th Anniversary Celebration for the Luray-Page County Center

On June 11, FEA seniors and Page County residents, Emilee and Sophia, along with FEA professor Jennifer Strickler, a Page County resident, participated in and were recognized at the 20th anniversary celebration.

Four women stand in a lobby beneath a "Welcome" sign at a 91探花 campus, near a colorful painted mural and a floral arrangement. A woman in a cream dress speaks into a microphone stand while holding a folder, addressing two young women, one in a black-and-white polka-dot top and black skirt, and the other in a coral top and jeans. A fourth woman in a floral skirt and white top gestures toward the two younger women. Glass entrance doors and a reception desk are visible in the background.

Choosing a college path can feel overwhelming, but here at 91探花, we make that process personal and approachable. On this episode of 鈥淭he Valley Today,鈥 outreach specialist and career coach Thomas Monk shares how his role is centered on helping prospective students of all ages navigate everything from applications and financial aid, to career exploration and transfer opportunities.

With a simple philosophy that “half the hurdle is just getting started,” Monk serves as a trusted first point of contact, connecting students to the right resources while making what can seem like a complicated process feel easy.

The conversation also highlights 91探花’s guaranteed transfer agreements with 37 Virginia colleges and universities, expanding workforce and tech programs, and the college’s commitment to meeting students wherever they are in their educational journey, whether that is exploring college for the first time, returning after years away, or preparing for a new career.

A rewarding nursing career may be closer than you think. On this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael was joined by 91探花 Director of Marketing Guy Curtis, Dean of Health Professions Dr. Scott Vanderkooi, and Interim Director of Nursing Dr. Amanda Hodges to discuss the many pathways into nursing and other healthcare careers.

The conversation highlighted a common misconception that becoming a nurse requires four years of education at a university. Through 91探花’s Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program, students can complete their education and become eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam in about two years. Graduates are entering a field with strong demand and excellent employment opportunities throughout the region.

The episode also introduced 91探花’s new weekend RN cohort, launching in spring 2027. Designed for working adults, the program combines online coursework with weekend labs, simulations, and clinical experiences, making it possible for students to continue working while pursuing their nursing degree.

Whether you’re a CNA, LPN, EMT, paramedic, career changer, or someone exploring healthcare for the first time, 91探花 offers flexible options to help you reach your goals. The discussion also covered G3 funding, which may help eligible Virginia residents significantly reduce or eliminate tuition costs for high-demand career programs, including nursing.

Prospective students and families are encouraged to attend an upcoming nursing information session to learn more about admission requirements, program options, funding opportunities, and career pathways.
